Introducing surfing & windsurfing Merchants' Directory
Vancouver Island Abound
The rolling waves of the Pacific Ocean have turned the west coast of Vancouver Island into a surfers' paradise, while offshore winds make any part of the coast and a number of freshwater lakes just perfect for windsurfing.

Among the hotspots:

SURFING

Jordan River/Port Renfrew - An hour west of Victoria, the Jordan River and Port Renfrew areas are quickly accessible for a day's outing. The Pacific waves sweep the coastline, creating perfect surfing conditions.

Long Beach - In Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Long Beach is surfing headquarters. Waves, some as high as 25 feet, have turned Long Beach into Canada's version of Malibu, California. The water is cold, but the enthusiasm is hot! You can rent surf boards and sign up for lessons at a number of locations in Tofino.

WINDSURFING

Anywhere the wind blows is where you'll find good windsurfing conditions on Vancouver Island.

Some notable hotspots:

Victoria - The waterfront, particularly off the south end of the city, is popular. To the east, the passages between the Gulf Islands is attracting more and more windsurfers.

Ladysmith - Right in the harbor.

Cowichan Lake - This long, narrow lake northwest of Duncan is popular for all types of watersports, including windsurfing.

Great Central Lake - Northwest of Port Alberni, Great Central Lake offers uncrowded conditions and lots of wide open water.

Rebecca Spit - On the east side of Quadra Island, Rebecca Spit's Drew Harbor offers protected waters for beginner windsurfers.

Nimpkish Lake - They say there's always a wind on this long narrow lake south of Port McNeill.
