It's all here to See and Do

Landing a BIG ONE, not having boat payments, leaving all the work to a professional and thoroughly enjoying your experience,.... are all terrific reasons to contact your favorite deep water fishing guide to have a relaxing Vancouver Island Fishing Adventure.

This summer my wife June and I were lucky enough to go fishing and eco-touring with Top Notch -
Port Hardy Fishing Guide, Jim Witton of CATALA CHARTERS.catalaredsnapper.jpg (62281 bytes)  I like fishing.... but Junie loves it, so when Jim called - she insisted  we hurry up to Port Hardy as quickly as possible and go fishing. Thank goodness the road is wide and easy driving.

In no time at all, we were there, smelling that salt air that lets you know you are in God's country. Northern Vancouver Island is wild, wooly and beautiful. We stopped in to Jim and Cathy's C-View B&B right on the way in to town. Overlooking the harbour we enjoyed wine while watching the sun go down. It was fun talking with them, sharing their northern experiences. They tucked us in and off we went to sleep, dreaming of  being on the water early the next day.

As I mentioned earlier Junie loves her fishing so she was eager to get going and catch some fish. After a splendid breakfast Jim gathered us up and away we went to the dock. He had just bought this new catala3.jpg (17465 bytes)boat the week before so he was raring to show us all the features. And what a super setup he had for the fishing. The cockpit is huge, with lots of room to move around and play the fish. The two electric downriggers, made the fishing easy.   So out of the harbour we go with all the radios on and the whale watching boats reporting in as to where the whales were today. We heard there were some Grey Whales around, so as we were traveling to the fishing grounds we watched for those giants, and  it wasn't long and right on queue were a mom and her calf swimming off the port side cruising up and down the coast. When they blew, they made quite a noise and you can certainly see their smoke. It was very impressive seeing them so close up out in the Pacific.

It was interesting seeing  Jim use the latest technology. Right from the dock Jim used his Globalcatala2.jpg (10422 bytes) Positioning System (GPS) that was hooked up to his laptop computer. From the nautical chart on his computer screen, we could watch where we were exactly as we zoomed down the coast. After a 40 minute run to one of Jim's favorite Halibut holes,  we set up for some bottom fishing at a depth of 275'.   Jim had inputted it's co-ordinates earlier and just had to press a button to set the course and get us exactly over the hole. By using his sounder and GPS map setup he was able to put us right on it and keep us there so we were able get down to where the fish were..........And by golly it worked.        Super Guide Jim - did it all - Jim set up all of our gear, put us over the hole, showed us how to jig, ran the downriggers, maneuvered the boat, provided an excellent lunch and manned the net. Within 20 minutes Junie hooked up a nice 22lb halibut. She's a little bit of a thing, so she had quite a fight to bring that beauty to the boat. She was pretty happy getting that one! You can probably tell from the ear to ear grin on her face how much fun she was having, way to go Junie!   catalasmile.jpg (13838 bytes)We caught another ten bottom fish but no more halibut so we decide to head off and go see some Orcas  ( KillerWhales.) Because of the constant whale watching chatter on the airwaves we were able to find them not too far away and had a catalajune.jpg (23747 bytes)great time watching the whales for a couple of hours, I was amazed about how much Jim knew about the different pods and individual whales in those groups. I guess being out on the water day in day out keeps him in tune with who they are and what they are up to.

From there we ran up to the Gordon Group of Islands just to the north of Port Hardy and set our rods for Salmon. The reports we had,  were that it was a bit spotty but we thought we'd try anyways. In the northern waters the salmon school and come in wave after wave on their way to their respective spawning grounds. Springs, Coho, Chums and Pinks can be so bountiful you can't keep them off your lines. As we only had one afternoon of  salmon fishing, try as we may, we never did get a hit, they just weren't coming through that day. Needless to say we were a bit disappointed but that is the nature of fishing, you've got to put in the hours and even then be lucky to hit it just right. After we got home the following day Jim called and told us the bite was on again, a record 212 lb. Halibut had just been caught and a whole bunch of 40lb+ Spring salmon.
I guess we'll just have to head back!!

What a treat though, Jim and Cathy were wonderful hosts and made our stay with them at the C-View B&B and our fishing with Catala Charters a highlight of the summer.
